Book Update: May (2019)

Hey Happy Bookworms!

So today’s gonna be a long post again, I’m on my half term so I’ve had a lot of time to read! Don’t worry about spoilers in this post, I promise anything spoilery will be marked! Also, I made some graphics for this *Let’s see how this goes* 😂

I had such a good reading month though! 4 5-star reads, 3 4-star reads & only 2 3-star reads. I just really enjoyed most of the books I read this month!
Also, I made some bookish discoveries:

• I love thriller/mysteries & I really enjoyed using them as a refresher between fantasies!
• I tried out 2 graphic novels & actually really enjoyed them

Heartless by Marissa Meyer 

AHHHHHHH! I love this book so much! Y’all probably know already since I’ve been screaming about it to all of you on your posts!
This definitely beat cinder – hands down & I’m so glad I read cinder first so it only got better! I’m hoping that the lunar chronicles get even better and that they follow in the footsteps of this book!
It was honestly just so good – you know when you read an incredible book & you just don’t have enough words to describe it to someone? All I can say is that you just have to read it, like, as soon as possible!

The ending was so good, like I knew it was gonna happen but I just really didn’t want to believe it!
And the characters were gorgeous, Hatta & Raven were presented so well! And Jest 😭💔
Marissa did such a good job at using wonderland, everything was so smart & I loved picking up all the little Easter eggs!
I also loved reading her little note/information thing at the end about Lewis Carroll.

Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett

This wasn’t as good as I was hoping it would be 😦 I really want to read Alex, approximately so when I got the opportunity to read this as an ARC, I was super excited but it just wasn’t as good as I hoped – read my full review here.

Heartstopper (volume one) by Alice Oseman

I can hear the fangirl screams from here 😂 I saw this in my library & I know some of you that have loved this graphic novel so I thought I’d pick it up. AND IT’S SO CUTE!
It was set in England, which was a welcome surprise, so it was just extra funny to me in some bits.
This is meant to be the backstory of 2 characters in another of Alice Oseman’s books, can’t remember which one, anyway I haven’t read that one yet but it’s on my TBR & I wouldn’t say you need to read the original book first.
Also, this was my first graphic novel in awhile! Definitely my first YA one & I really enjoyed it!

Two can keep a secret by Karen M. McManus

I knew I wanted to read this after reading one of us is lying & I’ve now become a big fan of Karen M. McManus! I have to admit, I enjoyed one of us is lying more but I think I just liked the characters more in that (so, personal preference?)
Karen M.McManus is always very good at handling multi-perspective books but sometimes I got a bit confused & had to go back & check who’s chapter I was reading, I think that was just because I got caught up in the story & didn’t pay attention to the chapter narrator though.
Anyway, despite what I said about the one of us is lying thing, there’s still lots of great characters & I love how everything turned out with the family mysteries as well!

A Story About Cancer With a Happy Ending by India Desjardins, Marianne Ferrer (Illustrator), Solange Ouellet (Translator)

This wasn’t like your typical graphic novel, it read more like a picture book with big picture spreads and minimal text.
This was just a cute story – I saw it in my library, picked it up & read it quickly.
It’s nice to know you’re getting a happy ending 🙂

Toffee by Sarah Crossan

I really wasn’t sure about the premise of this book but it actually worked so well!Honestly, how could I ever have even considered not reading a Sarah Crossan?!
I just love the way she writes & not just the tone but the format.
And she always makes me cry – which is a good thing in these cases! 😭
But overall it was so, so, so sweet & it’s crazy how attached you get to the characters when you can read the book pretty quick.

Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian

This is the sequel to Ash Princess (see my reread review here)
For most of this book, it wasn’t what I wanted. It was tame & even boring as nothing of much substance went on. The end however, picked up immensely.
I did love the writing though – when I was reading it, I never felt bored, I just feel that now, looking back on it. It’s one of the reason this book took me so long to read, I enjoyed it when I was reading it but never felt encouraged to start reading it.

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

This was a buddy read with my GR friend, Gab 💕 (Hey, if you’re reading 😉) We read strange the dreamer together so it was only natural we read this together too!

*Little spoiler* Ahhh! What can I say?
I love the world of Lazlo Strange so, so, so much!
It was a great sequel (I feel like nowadays authors always stretch their series out so they’re so long) & I’m happy it’s only a duology because everything just fell into place! Great character arcs (especially Minya 💖) and a perfect ending for a perfect story!

We Are Young by Cat Clarke

Another thriller/mystery book, well GR says it isn’t but I think it kinda is so…
*Spoilers*
I liked this one because it was new, it wasn’t about murder. It still had some seriously dark, messed up stuff in it though *cough* Tim *cough* it was interesting because it was about a real-life thing that’s devastating & yeah, sometimes it got a bit preachy but it was alright.
And a great family dynamic *cough* apart from Tim *cough* Evan’s mum was so sweet! And Billy was definitely my favourite character, Evan’s such a good big sis to him!
