Dumplin’ – 10 reasons the book’s better than the movie

How are we all doing today?! I just broke up from school & OH MAN AM I EXCITED FOR CHRISTMAS *woo*

I read Dumplin’ last month finally & loved it (this is my review) anyway, I watched the movie on Netflix (while painting my nails & cuddling with my dog ☺) and it was genuinely really good, but with all book to movie adaptions we have to except that there are gonna be things that we hate. IT CAN NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH!

Let’s have a look…. (Obviously spoilers but I don’t really reveal anything too bad it’s basically just me ranting)

Things I didn’t like:

1.  They just skipped the whole of Amanda’s character. Completely. LIKE WHAT?! I know side characters normally get their plot line dropped but they just dropped her whole character, like she didn’t even exist in the Dumplin’ world! I think this was bad because 1) Hannah shows that Millie actually has good friends & 2) She wears corrective shoes & does mad football tricks LIKE TRY & TELL ME SHE’S NOT AWESOME!
2. Bo’s story also gets cut, he says one thing about not all private school kids being rich & then suddenly he’s transferred to the public school & that’s it. We don’t get how he’s there on a sports scholarship, or how his brother hates him for being injured or his awesome step-mum! (basically a real absence of all the awesome characters)
3. Speaking of Bo, we miss some awesome moments with him & Will like her birthday at the abandoned school or how they went trick or treating late at night. Moments like these, movies always have to miss out & it’s so sad because these kind of things are what make the book!
4. Another character that gets cut out is Mitch, who’s such a sweetheart 😦 He’s a really vital part of the story because it shows that actually Will has a lot of suitors lining up to go out with her despite her insecurities about her weight.
5. Also, can we just talk about how pathetic Millie’s character is in this? In the book, she’s this little ray of sunshine that’s secretly a boss & in the movie she’s. so. dumb. Like, literally, she’s portrayed like she’s stupid 🤦‍♀️ Which annoyed me so much & is probably the worst thing the movie did.
6.  I wished they’d shown more of Will & Bo’s relationship because that was some pretty important stuff right there. I think they only left it out so the movie could be a 12 which sucked because it meant their relationship wasn’t properly explored. Like all of Will’s insecurities & her being able to have a proper romance but then thinking Bo didn’t mean it (all the drama)
7. I don’t think Will & Ellen’s argument was very well shown either, like yeah they were mad at each other but it didn’t feel like it showed Will’s pain at losing Ellen (like all the texts she wrote but didn’t send) or their big make up conversation! It also felt like it was over super quick but maybe that’s just because you watch a movie in like 2 hours but read a book over a couple of days.
8. Ellen’s co-workers show a really horrible attitude towards Will & it’s just not in the movie. We need this beacuse otherwise Will is just being bitter and mean about people for no reason.
9. Will’s relationship with her mum is a lot better in the movie, which I get because they wanted this big story arc of her mum finally accepting her. Like how in the movie, Will basically pushes her mum to disqualify her (Why?!) and then it’s her mum’s idea to escort Elle but in the book, her mum doesn’t help at all & she hasn’t changed, instead it’s Elle & Will’s idea which is a nice point in their friendship but also shows Will doing what’s best for her & not for her mum.
10.  & finally THE dress. Like in the book it’s described as a very simple, sleek, classy look and in the movie, like I’m sorry but who invited the circus costumer to do Will’s outfit?!

Despite what I said the movie was really good, especially if you haven’t read the book before. But the book has so much diversity in it & characters that are different in so many different ways but still living their lives & the movie just lacked that, which was sad.
